Beliefs & Spirituality
(Hello everyone, Thai language learners! Today we will learn about an interesting and profound Thai culture, which is "Sak Yant," or sacred Thai tattoos. Sak Yant is not just body decoration, but an ancient art full of beliefs, power, and Buddhist philosophy.)
(Sak Yant comes from the word "sak" which means to pierce or stab, and "yan" which comes from the Sanskrit word "yantra," referring to a sacred diagram or chart used in religious rituals. These yantras consist of characters, numerical symbols, images, and various symbols believed to possess magical power to protect, bring good fortune, or enhance blessings for the recipient of the tattoo.)
(Sak Yant has existed since ancient times in Southeast Asia, especially in Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. In the past, warriors would get Sak Yant for invulnerability and protection from harm on the battlefield. Today, many people, both Thais and foreigners, are interested in Sak Yant for various purposes.
The person who performs the Sak Yant ritual is called an "ajaan sak" or "phra ajaan sak," who is often a Buddhist monk or a virtuous layperson who has studied magical arts and undergone long training. These individuals do not tattoo for beauty alone, but to transfer sacred power and blessings through the tattoo.)
(There are many yantra designs, each with different meanings and Buddhist virtues. Let's look at some popular examples:)
(Sak Yant is not just about getting a tattoo, but about taking responsibility for the power and Buddhist virtues that the master bestows. Therefore, there are important rules and practices that the tattooed person should strictly adhere to so that the yantra remains sacred and has a good effect on life. These rules are called "prohibitions" or "precepts.")
(Examples of common prohibitions:)
(Adhering to these precepts shows respect for the masters and the Buddhist virtues of the yantra. If the tattooed person does not comply, it is believed that the yantra will lose its power or may lead to undesirable outcomes.)
การสักยันต์เป็นพิธีกรรมที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ครับ ก่อนการสัก ผู้สักจะต้องจุดธูปเทียนบูชาครู (butcha khru - pay homage to the master) และกล่าวคำอธิษฐาน (klàao kham athitthan - make a wish) อาจารย์จะใช้เหล็กจาร (lek jaan - metal stylus) หรือเข็มสักแบบโบราณ (khem sak baep boraan - traditional tattoo needle) ที่ผ่านการปลุกเสก (pluk sek - consecration) มาแล้ว จุ่มลงในหมึกสักที่ผสมด้วยสมุนไพรศักดิ์สิทธิ์ (samunphrai sak sit - sacred herbs) และน้ำมัน (nam man - oil) จากนั้นอาจารย์จะเริ่มสักไปพร้อมกับการท่องคาถา (thong khathaa - chanting incantations) เพื่อบรรจุพุทธคุณลงในรอยสักครับ
(Sak Yant is a sacred ritual. Before tattooing, the recipient must light incense and candles to pay homage to the master and make a wish. The master will use a metal stylus or a traditional tattoo needle that has been consecrated, dipped in tattoo ink mixed with sacred herbs and oil. Then the master will begin tattooing while chanting incantations to imbue the tattoo with Buddhist virtues.)
(When the tattooing is finished, the master will blow incantations onto the tattoo to consecrate it again and give blessings to the recipient. All these steps demonstrate the faith and intention of both the recipient and the master.)
(Sak Yant is more than a tattoo; it is a part of Thai culture and spirituality that reflects belief in Buddhist virtues, power, and living according to the Dharma teachings of Buddhism. Learning about Sak Yant will help us better understand the profound aspects of Thai culture.)
